Description

Calcium phosphate is for mineral supplementation.

• When prescribed by a healthcare professional C.P. 57 is generally well tolerated at the recommended dose, and may be prescribed for infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, and the elderly.
• The easy-to-swallow tablet can be halved or crushed to facilitate low-dose prescribing for infants and children.

Prescribing Information
Calcium and phosphate are essential for growth and development. They are incorporated into bone, teeth and red blood cells, and involved in neuromuscular function and hormone secretion.

• Growth and development: Calcium plays a key role in mitotic division, the process in which cells divide and the growth process occurs. It is needed in increased quantities during times of rapid growth or cell turnover, including childhood, adolescence and pregnancy
• Phosphate is an essential element in all human cells and, like calcium, is necessary for normal growth and development, and is required in increased amounts during times of growth.
• Energy production: Phosphate is incorporated into intracellular compounds such as ATP and cyclic AMP and consequently plays a key role in energy production.
• Red blood cell production: Calcium is involved in red blood cell production, and phosphate is incorporated into 2,3 diphosphoglycerate (2,3 DPG), a compound in red blood cells that regulates oxygen release by haemoglobin.
• Bone and teeth: Calcium phosphate is taken up by the skeleton, and is an essential nutrient for the growth and development of bone and teeth.
• In the presence of calcium and phosphate, calcitonin levels rise, resulting in increased deposition of bone mineral via osteoblasts and suppression of osteoclastic activity.
• Muscle function: Both calcium and phosphate are necessary for contraction of cardiac, smooth, and skeletal muscle.
• Nerve function: Calcium is required for normal nerve function. It plays a role in regulating the electrical polarity of the cell membrane and is necessary for the secretion of neurotransmitters at the synapse and neuromuscular junction.
• Endocrine function: Both calcium and phosphate, as part of cyclic AMP, are common secondary messengers. There is an intracellular release of calcium and phosphate in response to activation of cell receptors. Calcium and phosphate are also involved in glandular and hormonal secretion.

 

Each tablet contains:

Calcium phosphate	130mg
elemental calcium	50.4mg
each tablet contains lactose	270mg

C.P. 57 may interact with certain other medications your patients may be taking. Calcium may decrease the absorption and efficacy of some medications. C.P. 57 should be administered at least 2 hours apart from tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, bisphosphonates and thyroid hormone.
